Teeth that are crooked, crowded, or have large gaps can be treated with braces. Nowadays, there are multiple types of braces that can treat a variety of orthodontic problems. In the past, only one treatment option was available: standard metal brackets.
Orthodontists have developed new treatments that have improved the look and feel of braces. Choosing which treatment plan works best requires an in-depth discussion with your orthodontist.
Metal (Stainless Steel) Braces
Metal braces are the traditional appliance used for orthodontic treatment. Traditional braces are more effective at treating severe orthodontic cases and are a cost-effective option for patients. Metal braces give your orthodontist better control to move teeth in small increments at a time.
A drawback of traditional metal brackets is that they are more noticeable than other types of treatments such as clear aligners, but the look of today’s metal braces is more appealing than in the past. Elastic ligatures are placed on individual brackets and come in a variety of colors. They can be used as a form of unique self-expression and allow patients to customize their braces experience. They also function to hold the archwire firmly in place.
Of course, certain foods should be avoided with metal braces. Sticky, hard, and chewy food can damage the brackets or archwire in your braces. It’s important to be aware of the food you are eating.
Ceramic (Clear) Braces
Ceramic braces are a more discrete alternative to traditional braces. The brackets and wires match the color of your teeth and therefore are less noticeable than metal brackets. Ceramic braces are slightly more expensive than traditional stainless steel braces, but essentially work the same way in terms of their effectiveness.
Invisalign or Clear Aligners
Clear aligners, such as Invisalign, are a series of invisible plastic aligners that are worn over your teeth to gradually shift them into the desired position. They work faster than traditional braces however they are not typically a treatment option for severely crooked or misaligned teeth.
Clear aligners offer a more comfortable and discreet way to straighten your teeth compared to metal or ceramic braces. Clear aligners work in an easy and nearly undetectable manner with no drastic lifestyle adjustments. Because clear aligners are removable, they can be taken out when eating and therefore you do not have limitations on the foods you can eat. While clear aligners should be worn for at least 22 hours a day, they can be removed for short periods of time for special events, presentations, portraits, etc.
By being able to communicate your desired outcomes, budget, and lifestyle with your orthodontist, they will be able to develop the best course of treatment for you.
